Subject: IT'S BACK: State Senate Taking Up "Early Election Day" Bill TOMORROW. Don't Be Silent.
• SB300 would require an "Early Election Day" in every Michigan city and township • Last week we warned SB300 was up in committee – it was removed from the calendar hours later • It's back on the calendar for Wednesday, May 12, 2pm • Sign the petition and contact your lawmakers to oppose the election anti-integrity bill right now! Dear Michigan Patriots, Last week, we sent out an alert that Senate Bill 300, which would require every city and township in Michigan have an "Early Election Day" ten days before the regular election day – with all the trappings!* – was up for a hearing in the Elections Committee the next day. *("Trappings": Hauling in the machines and ballot boxes, hiring poll workers, creating felonies for leaking the early results, etc.) It is, at its core, an anti-integrity election bill. One that nobody asked for, strangely. Or is it? Why is the Senate moving this bill forward? (Make no mistake; holding a committee hearing is moving a bill forward.) Hours after our e-mail alert last week, the bill was yanked from the committee calendar for that hearing. But now, they're bringing it back. SB300 is up again for discussion tomorrow, Wednesday May 12, in the Senate Election Committee. Senate Bill 300 would mandate that every city and township in Michigan have an "early election day" on the Saturday ten days before the regular election. All of the challenges, complexities, and costs of having an election would be duplicated for this "early election day," plus new challenges. The bill's author, Wayne Schmidt (R-Traverse City) seems to acknowledge this in the bill itself, which makes it a felony for anyone to disclose or even characterize the results of the "early" election. Obviously, the bill is addressing a problem of its own making. But the biggest problem is that creating an early election day with all the trappings of a regular election – poll workers, poll challengers, poll books, notices, security, ballots, preservation – all of these are more complexities, more vulnerabilities, and more challenges for candidates and campaigns. Think about it: Every complexity makes it harder for campaigns, and especially harder for the campaign with less money. Legislation like this makes it harder for regular people to run for office, and discourages regular people from running for office. Sign the petition RIGHT NOW to tell your representative and Senator to OPPOSE Senate Bill 300! Feel free to call your state senator, too, or even show up to the hearing, tomorrow (Wednesday) at 2pm in Room 403 on the fourth floor of the Capitol. It is open to the public.
